Classification of elastic tapes: three major categories by weaving process

According to the weaving process, they are mainly divided into three major categories: woven, knitted, and braided. Products made by different processes have distinct structural and performance characteristics, making them suitable for various application scenarios.

Woven elastic tapes are produced by interlacing warp and weft yarns. They feature a compact structure, stable elasticity, good dimensional stability, and relatively high stiffness. These tapes can be made in various weaves such as plain, twill, and jacquard, offering a rich variety of patterns. They are widely used in waistbands, garment belts, home textile ties, and other applications requiring shape retention. This is a long-established category with broad application coverage.

Knitted elastic tapes are mostly manufactured using warp knitting and crocheting processes. They are soft, skin-friendly, and have good extensibility with smooth edges. Thanks to their gentle touch and uniform elasticity, these tapes are widely used in close-fitting scenarios such as bra shoulder straps, shapewear waistbands, and infant garment waistbands. Among them, the crocheting process offers high production efficiency, making it one of the mainstream elastic accessories in the intimate apparel sector.

Braided elastic tapes are produced by spindle braiding, where yarns are crossed and braided along guide tracks to form flat or tubular shapes. They provide uniform elasticity, excellent abrasion resistance, and outstanding tensile strength. These tapes are commonly used in garment drawstrings, backpack cinch cords, and sports protective gear accessories. Some heavy‑duty specifications are also applicable in outdoor equipment and industrial strapping, demonstrating strong adaptability.
